New offensive coordinator Rod Smith has made quite an impact in his two weeks in Champaign. He has told me they wanted 4 QB’s when fall camp hits. After passing on DJ Irons Rod knew exactly who he wanted, three star gunslinger Matt Robinson who plays in one of the toughest high school leagues in the country. Matt told me this afternoon he gave his commitment to the staff earlier in the day. I caught up with him when he returned home from his visit.
One on one with Robinson
Matt told me New Illini OC has an eye for talent and he had a great weekend in Champaign and loved the staff and the campus. He also said he was slept on and very under the radar, that builds a chip on someone’s shoulder.
Mike Epstein was Matt’s host and they got along well. He looks forward to competing for Illinois position in the fall. He wanted to wait until after the super Bowl to announce and told me big things are in store.
Matt gives Illinois four options who can run well and pass the ball, something which is ideally what Rod Smith runs. Matt wasn’t highly recruited because he’s around 6 foot. Rod Smith has done well with shorter Qbs in the past with the likes of Dennard Robinson. Matt can make all the throws and is extremely elusive with his feet. Don’t count him out with the competition this fall. He’s a hard worker and has that chip on his shoulder. With commitments from kenyon Sims and Matt Robinson Illinois is hot on the heels of four star Merlin Robertson as well, a California pipeline has opened for the hard working Fighting Illini staff. Lack of talent and depth at the QB spot is no longer a problem in Champaign
