It’s no secret the Illinois mens basketball team, is in need of better shooters and higher caliber athletes. The staff has been busy recruiting from coast to coast for some help, including the junior college ranks. Panola College in Texas is where you will find Marlon Taylor – 6 foot 6 and 200 pounds with 50 inch vertical. Yes I said 50 inch vertical, he also shoots 42 percent from deep and over 80 percent from the line. Marlon fits exactly what illinois needs, he’s scoring over 16 points a game also averaging 10 rebounds a game. His highlight film is quite impressive. Not hard to see why he’s gotten looks from high profile schools over the last few months. I got a chance to speak to Marlon and his head coach at panola last weekend.
Q&A with Marlon Taylor and coach Adam Blaylock
With such impressive stats this season Marlon has gotten plenty of attention. I asked him about his recruitment and which schools he has heard from the most and how his relationship with the Illinois staff has been.
Marlon told me “I have had Xavier and LSU in to see me a few times, a bunch of other schools have been in to see me as well. Coach Jamall walker was in to see me last week, he talks with my coaches alot and it’s been fun getting to know him.”
I asked him when he had plans on taking trips and visits. He said “I want to take all my visits and worry about that after my season.”
I spoke to assistant coach at Panola College Adam Blaylock about the kind of man Marlon is and his play on the court.
He told me “Marlon is a great person, he’s only going to get better as a player too. He’s been here two years and been apart of alot of success. The Illini staff seem to be all in on him but none of the decision process and visits will happen until after our season.”
While the Illinois staff hasn’t offered yet it wouldn’t surprise me if it happens soon. Transfer are bound to happen and even though the staff has offered several guards, none are as explosive and dangerous from deep as Marlon Taylor. I was told there is mutual interest for a visit after his season ends. One thing is clear, the Illini coaches know they need an upgrade in talent. Adding Marlon Taylor would fit the bill.
