The Illinois football team will be hosting another Junior day this month after a successful St. Louis targeted day happened in February. Some of the state’s best players will be on hand including Decatur St.Teresa running back Jacardia Wright. He stands 6 feet tall and a chizzled 200 pounds, he’s been a man since he was 15. I have had the pleasure of watching him play three seasons in my hometown of Decatur.
He was named a max preps Freshman All American after rushing for nearly 1,600 yards. Jacardia has since amassed over 6,000 yards and 85 touchdowns in his three seasons including helping lead his team to the state championship game in 2016. Lovie Smith was on hand to watch that game, Wright had an injured ankle that lingered and he wasn’t himself in that game. That has been a motivator for Jacardia as he looks to have his best season yet and take St. Teresa back to the championship game. I caught up with Jacardia and spoke to him about his recruitment and visit to Illinois this weekend.
Q&A with Jacardia Wright
Many people project Jacardia as a college Safety. I wanted to know where the Illinois staff sees him fitting in. Jacardia told me ” The Illini staff sees me as a running back.”
Running Backs coach Thad Ward has led his recruitment and Jacardia has nothing but great things to say about the staff. He said” I really like them a lot there great people and good coaches and they told me they’ll keep an eye out on me”.
Jacardia is thick and extremely muscular, one thing the staff wants to see is more burst and breakaway speed. I asked him what are some things he wants to improve on heading into his senior year. He told me “I want to get Faster and more powerful moving forward and more balanced side to side”
Jacardia is a top 800 player nationally and a top 15 player in the state. I think a big senior season could put him in the top 10. He is a physically gifted kid with great strength to break tackles. He would be the biggest running back on this years Illini team and he still has one season of high school to go. I think it’s a great possibility Illinois offers this weekend. Jacardia just got offered officially by Iowa and has offers from Central and Western Michigan as well as Northern Illinois. If Illinois doesn’t want to get behind the eight ball an offer would be smart this weekend. Iowa would figured to be leading and losing another very good player from Illinois to Iowa would be tough to swallow. This is another big weekend for the class of 2019
