Illinois was the first school to offer a scholarship to Momence junior DE Jason Bargy. The staff have made sure to keep a close relationship and see his recruitment to the finish line. Rated anywhere from top 200-500 nationally, hes also a top 40 prospect at his DE postion. He came to visit in January and sat right next to coach Lovie Smith at a mens basketball game.

He made it back this weekend to watch the open practice/scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. Meeting some of the new staff and hanging out with potential teammates is criticial. I caught up with Jason about his visit and how his recruitment is progressing.

In his words : Jason Bargy

I wanted to know what particular things he would be watching for during practice that will be important for him down the road. He told me “I want to see how the tempo is on defense. I also want to see how coaches and team bond on and off the field. I have been building a relationship with Coach Clark as well.”

Even though Illinois offered Jason first, many schools are hard after him. He took a recent visits to MSU and Minnesota. I wanted to see who has really been showing the most love. Jason told me “Right now Illinois, Iowa State and Minnesota have been recruting me the hardest.”

Of course with all of this said, a player has to make a decision. Obviously I was curious if Jason had a timeline for a decision. He tells me he will be deciding in the next couple of months. That means Before his senior season starts Jason will be deciding where he will suit up in the fall of 2019.

While it is possible for other schools to creep in his recruitment, I believe Illinois battling Iowa State and Minnesota is definitely winnable. Jason is proud of his Illinois roots and really likes the staff. Having offered first will always mean something and even though wins and losses haven’t shown up on the field, the recruiting momentum is hard to deny.

Matt Campbell and PJ Fleck are bright young minds but no staff has the NFL experience Illinois can provide. I Expect Jason to take some Officials before his announcement but Illinois has itself postioned well for Jason Bargy
