One of the key goals for the Illini football team has been to add more speed and athleticism. I think its safe to say they have done that since Lovie Smith has arrived. A huge focal point for it’s new fast paced spread offense led by new offensive coordinator Rod Smith is speed.

Insert 5 foot 7 160 pound Kyron Cumby from Plano, Texas. Kyron is about 90 minutes from where Lovie Smith grew up in Big Sandy. Andrew Hayes-Stoker have lead this recruitment and have hit it off well, which led to Kyron coming to Friday night Lights in Champaign over the weekend. I caught up with the Trail blazer from Plano about his visit and recruitment going forward.

In his words with Kyron Cumby

First off, It was important to know how Kyron enjoyed his visit and hanging with the coaching staff.

Kyron told me “I love the coaching staff a love of both College experience and NFL experience. I’m really excited for the facility upgrades it looks very good and is going to be the best among any in the country.”

As for where the staff sees him fitting in on Rod Smith’s high octane offense and what they like about his game.

He told me “I can bring speed to the offense. They are building this offense around speed. They see my playing both running back and slot”

As for getting to know possible teammates Marquez Beason and Isaiah Williams who he competed with and caught passes from.

Kyron said “Of course it’s important to build a relationship with the players that your going to be w for the next 3-4 years. I love the type of player that Illinois is recruiting and already have there.”

Kyron told me he plans on taking some more visits and right now he is looking to decide before his senior season starts where he will play during college.

Swami’s Take

The Illini staff is very fond of Kyron’s speed and elusiveness as well as versatility playing multiple positions. After this visit the Illini are in good position for the speedy back who also has offers from SMU,Washington State, Colorado and Iowa State.

The Illini could have taken a commitment last week from Vincent Davis of Cardinal Gibbons (FL) but really liked Cumby. They wanted him on campus bad and while Davis visited Pitt and committed this weekend, Illinois did everything it needed to be in prime position to land Kyron.
