The Illini were able to flip 3-Star Chicago Phillips CB Joseph Thompson from Iowa State and landed a commitment from him. He was the third commit of the 2019 class, which is now gaining some steam with 8 total commits. He is a talented prospect with ties to another big time Illini target, Chicago Phillips 3-Star WR Fabian McCray.
Joseph Thompson is rated as the 22nd best player in the state of Illinois and 115th best Cornerback in the Nation. These rankings don’t jump out, but he is a competitive player and only expects the best from himself. I took sometime to talk to him about what he hopes to accomplish as an Illini.
AS: My first question is why did you choose to commit to Illinois after you de-commit from Iowa State?
Joseph Thompson: Well first off ISU is a great university and they are doing great things in Ames. But I chose Illinois because I believe I am going to help make Illinois great. Being from the Chicago area, all of my family will be able to come see me play. I also believe that the recruiting class and myself will be remembered as one of the best if not the best to come through Champaign.
AS: What are you most excited about for your upcoming senior season?
Joseph Thompson: Really just everything. We have a good schedule this year, and we are traveling a lot. Our first game is on ESPN, so this season will be fun.
AS: What are you hoping to achieve during your time at Illinois?
Joseph Thompson: I will be remembered as arguably the best defensive back to come out of Illinois and I will become a better person and learner. I will also become a very good student in the classroom and in the game of football.
AS: What are you planning on majoring in?
Joseph Thompson: Communications or Sports Medicine.
AS: Have you been in contact with anyone of the current Illini players, commits, or guys considering committing?
Joseph Thompson: Yes, I am really close with Ricky Smalling and I talk a lot with Marquez and Isaiah. And I’ve been working on Fabian.
AS: What’s your reaction to Fabian committing yesterday?
Joseph Thompson: I am very excited. I get to experience college with my brother. It’s like a dream.
Joseph Thompson is player that oozes confidence and that is really really important. He and Marquez Beason can be one of the best CB pairings that the Illinois football program has ever fielded. He just like the others in the 2019 class, really believe that they can accomplish something special in their time at Illinois.
Also, Joseph Thompson was an integral part of the Fabian McCray commitment to Illinois in my opinion. They are both high school teammates and most importantly, very close. I think with this commitment, both will try to shift their recruiting focus to Jahleel Billingsley one last time in the hope of convincing their fellow Chicago native to join the IlliniGang19.
