It’s no secret the Illinois football staff has made Trinity Catholic in St. Louis a bullseye for recruiting. Immense talent has flooded from the program including 2 current Illini freshman Isaiah Williams and Shammond Cooper. The class of 2020 is no different with the likes of Mookie Cooper, Jalen St. John, Reggie Love and James Frenchie.
The Illini staff have secured a verbal from Reggie Love and are looking to get the other 3 on board as well. I caught up with OL priority Jalen St. John about his recruitment and his thoughts on the Illinois staff along with a decision timeline. The 6 foot 5 – 300 lb guard just finished a visit with mizzou.
One on one with Jalen St. John
I wanted to check in with the talented high 3 star from Trinity about his relationship with the staff including former high school head coach Cory Patterson and new Illini offensive line coach Bob Mcclain as well if he will be visiting Champaign before he makes a decision on where he will attend college.
I asked Jalen his thoughts on the Illini staff as a whole and where he sees the football program heading in the future. He said
I like the Illini staff they are real good men … the future of the program is going to look good for them. I am not sure how I will fit in with them but I will adjust accordingly.
His relationships with Cory Patterson and Bob Mcclain will be key in this recruitment and could play a vital role. He said
I really have connected with Coach Mcclain and Coach Patterson is like a father to me. They have made me feel like a priority.
With football season just around the corner. I was interested in how close to making a decision. Jalen told me
I am very close to making my decision and I will be taking one last visit. I will be visiting Illinois and thats it. I have not set the visit date yet.
This recruitment will boil down to Mizzou and Illinois. While Illinois getting the final visit could bode well, Mizzou has made a big impression on Jalen. Illinois has gotten the better of Trinity Catholic talent against Mizzou and having Cory Patterson gives Illinois something Mizzou doesn’t have. Every kid is different though, Jalen is a very underrated prospect with a sky high ceiling of talent and size. Illinois has Jalen at the top.of its offensive line board for a reason.
Jalens mother and family have nothing but love and respect for the Illinois staff. Matt Moore spoke with them last year at Trinity Catholics road game in Colquitt county Georgia and it still holds true to this day. Will family over everything (FOE) win out in gaining Jalens commitment? We will soon find out after his visit to Illinois.
